SUMMARY:Keep Calm & CRISPR On: State of the Science\, Business & Ethics of CRISPR
DESCRIPTION:Join the LES Research Triangle Park Chapter at their next event: Keep Calm and CRISPR On – The State of the Science\, Business\, & Ethics of CRISPR \nResearch in the early 2000s began to shed light on the capabilities of CRISPR to function as a gene editing tool that can very efficiently delete\, repair or replace genes. \nCRISPR was then rapidly recognized for its potential applications in research\, therapeutics\, agriculture and industrial biotechnology. \nEnthusiasm around CRISPR has been met with concerns regarding intellectual property battles\, potential off-target mutations and ethical implications surrounding its use in humans. Meanwhile\, breakthroughs in CRISPR technology continue to arise from both the commercial and academic sectors which could enhance target specificity and fine-tune CRISPR for various applications. The number of CRISPR-related startup companies is exploding and the first CRISPR-related clinical trial in the U.S. began earlier this year. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the state of CRISPR and its applications\, including the commercial landscape for CRISPR technologies\, hurdles for advancement\, and ethical\, regulatory and policy considerations for application of these technologies. \nSpeaker: Dr. Rodolphe Barrangou\, world renowned expert and pioneer in the discovery and application of CRISPR technology. \nOnline registration is required. Tickets are $35 for LES members; $40 for non-members. Lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Using Clinical Data From The Wild: HIPAA Compliant Wearables & Virtual Assistants
DESCRIPTION:Wearable data collection devices (Garmin Wearables\, Apple Watch\, etc.) provide opportunities to collect real-time data from clinical research subjects. This can include physiological measurements like heart rate and Pulse Oxymetry and behavioral measurements like steps taken\, stairs climbed\, minutes slept. But the opportunity presents uncertainties: What’s the quality of the sensors and collected data? Is there data security? Is the data provided in a HIPAA compliant manner? What about publicly available data\, like Strava\, can that be aggregated and used as clinical trial data? In this forum\, we’ll discuss the opportunities presented by wearables\, the regulatory rules of the road\, and effective approaches to take. We will also hear from Boston Children’s Hospital about their program using Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa to enable parents and caregivers to provide clinicians with updates on their progress after surgery and get information on post-operative appointments. \nWalk-ins welcome. \nSpeakers

SUMMARY:NC Regulatory Affairs Forum Spring Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Spring Symposium hosted by the North Carolina Regulatory Affairs Forum will be held May 9th\, 2019 at the Research Triangle Park Headquarters. Networking will begin at 5:30 p.m.\, followed by dinner at 6 p.m.\, and the presentation at 7 p.m. \nGiven the increasing focus on the use of real-world data in clinical research and regulatory decision-making\, this year’s keynote will focus on “Accelerating Clinical Research by Leveraging EHR Data” and will be presented by Dr. Kristen Buck\, SVP\, Chief Clinical Development for the Life Sciences at Optum. \nThe pharmaceutical industry is at a tipping point.  Clinical trials in the United States have become increasingly more expensive and complex with 70% of clinical trials missing their timelines and 11% of research sites failing to enroll a single patient.  Data are abundant and the recent FDA guidances around the use of RWD in clinical research has made the investment in vast clinical data sets even more compelling.  By harnessing clinical data\, specifically electronic medical record data\, and leveraging technological advances\, the current clinical trial paradigm can be re-engineered to execute clinical trials that are faster\, that utilize fewer resources\, and that are more grounded in real world practice. \n
