Apple says that many iPhone users now have the ability to see their medical records, collated from multiple sources via the iPhone Health app. This follows beta testing of the expanded app earlier this year in which UNC Health Care was one of only 12 participating institutions.
In a blog post, Apple said this new function brings together hospitals, clinics and the existing iPhone Health app to make it easy for consumers to see their available medical data from multiple providers whenever they choose.
The Health Records feature was previously available to patients who joined the Apple Beta Software Program. Today, patients from nearly 40 health institutions can view their medical records by updating their iOS software on their iPhone. Participants include the Duke University Health System as well as UNC Health Care.
The Health app functionality will allow UNC Health Care patients to seamlessly download their electronic health record data from participating provider organizations, including UNC Health Care’s My UNC Chart, and integrate with Apple’s existing personal data tracking and reporting features, Apple says.
“The updated Health Records section within the Health app helps consumers see medical information from various institutions organized into one view and receive notifications when their data is updated,” Apple explained.
“This information can help patients better understand their health history, have informed conversations with physicians and family members, and make future decisions. Health Records data is encrypted and protected with the user’s iPhone passcode.”
